Nordic Walking can be thought of in two ways: either as a style of walking with poles, or a type of cross-country skiing without the skis. It is an enhanced form of normal walking in which the arms are used to push on poles. Nordic Walking thus burns 20-46% more calories than normal walking, but without the participant feeling they are working much harder. Because it can be done at many different levels, it is suitable for people recovering from illness or with low levels of fitness, and those seeking to lose weight, right up to athletes who are looking for a new challenge, or a new form of cross-training. I have taught people in their teens right up to their seventies, so it is very suitable exercise for all age groups.
It is important to get instruction when you are starting out with Nordic Walking, so that you develop the best technique and get the best from the time you spend exercising. I can help you, whether your goal is to take the first steps to fitness, or to develop fitness right up to endurance event level. I recently completed a half marathon as a nordic walker, but you don't have to aim for this, just to enjoy yourself and get fit!

I am an International Nordic Walking Association qualified instructor, affiliated to Nordic Walking UK. I am able to help you learn how to Nordic Walk effectively and safely.
I can offer one-to-one or group introductory sessions in the Tamworth area, as well as lessons to help people progress and develop technique. I also offer regular social walks in Tamworth, Kingsbury Water Park, and new for 2008, in Pooley Country Park. I can also arrange demonstrations for companies, fitness facilities, NHS and Local Council fitness initiatives and sports clubs. I can provide top quality Exel poles for people during their lessons and demonstrations.
Please contact me for further details and to organise an introductory lesson and start walking your way to fitness.
Matt Higginson in Lichfield also offers regular Nordic Walking classes and sessions, and you might like to join in on these too. Details are on his web site.
If you are interested in the 2008 Lakeland Trails Nordic Challenge, please visit their web site for details. I will be participating in all four challenges and am happy to help you get fit for these events through Nordic Walking classes or personal training.
